'The Woman
''The Woman' debuted in Manchester as part of the 'Not Part Of' festival. It is a 2 woman show performed by Jemma Houghton and Rebecca Morris who between them play 26 characters, both male and female.

Press Release:
'No woman is ordinary. Each has her own secrets, flaws & desires.… Meet the people we have talked to, as we share their accounts with you. Frank, intimate & honest - these are the women you see every day, the women you ignore, the women you love.'

Inspired by:
'The Woman' was inspired by International Women's Day (8th March). With only one day a year being dedicated to the wonder that is the woman and wanting to add a little more, LittleLegs & LongLegs embarked on researching anything and everything there is to know about women. We set up an anonymous email account so men and women alike could email us their thoughts on the topic; we stood on Market Street in Manchester and interviewed passers-by, (which was an experience to say the least!); and we spoke to friends and family about their relationships, struggles and triumphs as women of the world, thus forming the basis for our piece.

Review by Susanna Yeomans:
'LittleLegs and LongLegs bring you 'The Woman', or rather the women – and plenty of them. All loud, proud and formidable in their own way, actresses Rebecca and Jemma enact a total of 26 characters in their two-woman show.  Whilst their varying guises keep the audience entertained with prize one-liners and uncanny regional accents, the multitude of characters also points to the myriad roles that modern femininity both offers and imposes. The play puts ideals espoused by cultural phenomenon Sex and the City into an everyday environment, asking the women (and the men) am I executive, seductress or mother? Can I be all at once or must I choose one? Will you accept me for who I am, or demand that I be who you think I should be.

The two ladies are far from shy about engaging their audience in a healthy dose of rather intimate, and self conscious participative theatre, lending a feast of post-modernism, in both content and style. The play explores the arc of issues affecting modern women. Juxtaposing comedy and sincerity, they are unafraid to cover topics ranging from childbirth to rape, from oral sex to vaginal thrush. Their dialogue – challengingly visceral without excess of expletives – will ensure you leave the theatre squirming (delightedly) in the remnants of your British reserve.'

Review by Matt Mascarenhas

‘A plethora of short character sketches, beautifully observed and acted.’

‘Accents – all impeccable to my ears – range the length and breadth of the country, with both sexes ably represented.’

‘Episodes dealing with “women's issues” such as thrush, periods, PMT and child birth… synchronised dramatisation with legs akimbo and much wailing, which is probably not for the faint of heart.’

‘Most engaging and moving.’

‘Stories… of women successfully overcoming adversity of one form or another.’

‘Marvellous acting.’

‘LL&LL's play is an interesting, intriguing and informative piece of theatre. Overall, a thoroughly wonderful evening's entertainment, and a joyous celebration of The Woman, whoever she may be.’
